Farbgebende Stoffe natürlicher oder synthetischer Herkunft nennt man Farbmittel. Die in Lösungs- oder Bindemitteln unlöslichen Farbmittel heißen Pigmente. Lösliche organische Farbmittel bezeichnet man als Farbstoffe.
