Abstract

In the early days of optical communications, signal processing was provided electrically. This means that switching and routing of signals was operated in an electrical domain whereas only transmission over large distances was done optically. In order to reduce costs and to increase reliability, signal processing should be carried out in the optical domain in future optical transport networks. This is mainly due to two reasons; with increasing bit rate the complexity of the electrical domain increases significantly and, as will be shown in this Chapter, optical signal processing is much simpler.
