Abstract

The sister groups are species-poor entities with only few supraspecific taxa above the species level. The frequent life cycle of the Petromyzonta with the adult in the sea and ammocoete larva in fresh water is to be placed in the ground pattern of the Cyclostomata. This demands the assumption that the purely marine lifestyle of the Myxinoida with direct development represents a derived behavior.
