„Jede Facies einer Ablagerung zeigt wohlumrissene Eigenheiten petrographischer, geognostischer und paläontologischer Art, die im klaren Gegensatz zu den Eigenheiten eines anderen Faciesbereiches im gleichen geologischen Niveau stehen....“. In dieser von Amanz Gressly (1838) gegebenen Definition kommt die Notwendigkeit von interdisziplinären Untersuchungen klar zum Ausdruck. Paläontologische, sedimentologische, geologische und geochemische Daten liefern im Rahmen von Faziesanalysen Grundlagen für Aussagen über den Sedimentationsraum, die Lithogenese und über den Lebensraum der als Fossilien überlieferten Organismen.
