Abstract
The measurement of the wind field is widely recognized as fundamental for the accurate description of atmospheric dynamics and hence for the understanding and prediction of weather development. It has taken many decades for direct wind sensors like cup-anemometers and balloon sondes to be established. Now, they are partly replaced by remote sensors based on acoustic and electromagnetic radiation. The most promising remote sensing method for wind and turbulence measurements over various scales is the Doppler Lidar technique. At the DLR-Institute of Optoelectronics, there exists a long-standing experience in the development and application of ground-based systems which are based on cw, CO2 lasers. Pulsed Doppler lidars for airborne applications are presently under development.
