The MEDES Subshell: Towards an Open Architecture for Decision Support Systems

Knowledge Based Systems in Medicine: Methods, Applications and Evaluation

Abstract

Aknowledge based system concept is presented which enables the con- truction of decision support systems tailored for a specific application. This concept comprises three layers, a basic low level inference engine, a so-called subshell, and the knowledge base. The function of the subshell is to provide on the one hand a data model of representing (scientific) knowledge, and on the other hand to implement a high level reasoning model. The significance of the subshell concept is to further separate reasoning algorithms from knowledge representation. As the structure for knowledge representation and the reasoning mechanisms are explicitly defined in the subshell a very open and flexible system is created.
