Zusammenfassung
Nach der Definition von Schottmüller aus dem Jahr 1914 ist die Sepsis ein Krankheitsbild, welches entsteht, wenn Infektionserreger aus einem lokalen Infektionsherd nach Durchbrechen der Abwehrmechanismen ständig oder intermittierend in die Blutbahn eingeschwemmt werden, zu systemischen Krankheitszeichen Anlaß geben und darüber hinaus u. U. weitere Infektionsherde ausbilden. Diese Definition ist auch von der Konsensuskonferenz 1992 [2] aufgenommen worden, die für die Definition der Sepsis neben den Zeichen des SIRS einen nachgewiesenen Infektionserreger fordert.
