Zusammenfassung
In den Kapiteln 5 und 6 wurden bereits Phasenmodulatoren und Richtkopplermodulatoren vorgestellt, denen der lineare elektrooptische Effekt zugrundeliegt. In Halbleitern lassen sich noch andere Effekte zur Modulation ausnutzen. Hierzu zählen Elektroabsorption und Elektrorefraktion sowie absorptive und refraktive Effekte durch Änderung der Elektronendichte oder durch Bandauffüllung. Neben elektrischer Ansteuerung ist eine optische Anregung der Modulatoren möglich. Man kann auch Selbststeuerung des Lichtsignals beobachten, wenn beispielsweise das Licht selbst Ladungsträger erzeugt und damit die Transmission verändert oder wenn in einem pn-Übergang durch Ladungsträgergeneration eine Änderung der elektrischen Feldstärke hervorgerufen wird. Schließlich können in niedrig dotierten Halbleitern mit Quantenfilmstruktur exzitonische Effekte zur Modulation beitragen. Optisch gesteuerte Modulatoren finden zunehmend Interesse für eine rein optische Signalverarbeitung.
