Summary

The focus of this chapter is on how teachers and trainers are (or should be) trained at distance, but some attention is paid to several critical aspects involved in the problem, such as the problematic and ambiguous relation between teaching staff and learning technology, and the evolution of distance education models as a consequence of widespread diffusion of communication technologies.

Referring in particular to the newly collected experience from European projects, in the field which used to be the exclusive territory of national authority, the in-service teacher training is shortly presented and some design principles for teacher training are proposed in the conclusions.
