Zusammenfassung
In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ist das Haltbarmachen von Lebensmitteln mit ionisierenden Strahlen gesetzlich noch nicht zugelassen. Das Anwendungsfeld für ionisierende Strahlen ist deshalb die Sterilisation medizinischer Gebrauchsartikel. Auf dem Lebensmittelsektor ist das Konservieren mittels ionisierender Strahlen auch das international am wenigsten angewandte Verfahren. Einer der Gründe dafür sind die hohen Investitionskosten für die Strahlungsquelle, welche eine ununterbrochene Nutzung bei gleicher Ausbringung (möglichst von Produkten mit hohen Preisen) wünschenswert macht, was infolge der Saisonabhängigkeit der Ernten nicht ohne weiteres gewährleistet ist. Also wäre eine staatliche Förderung industrieller Investitionen erforderlich. Dagegen steht aber noch eine gewisse Unschlüssigkeit der Behörden hinsichtlich der Unbedenklichkeit einer Strahlenbehandlung von Lebensmitteln, welche durch eine generelle Strahlenverdrossenheit der Bevölkerung und durch Fehlinformationen genährt wird, beides freilich unberechtigterweise, weil kein anderes Konservierungsverfahren hinsichtlich der gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen gründlicher untersucht worden ist als dieses.
