Abstract

This chapter covers the effects of ionizing radiations on the chemical and physicochemical properties of thorium and its compounds. The effects of self-irradiation, i.e., irradiation originating in the material itself, in 232Th, the only isotope available in macroscopic amounts, are necessarily limited since 232Th emits only 2.9 α particles per mg · s, or 17.2 α particles per mg · s when allowed to come to equilibrium with all its decay products: this low specific activity is usually not sufficient to yield observable physicochemical consequences unless one deals with geological time spans. However, we have at hand a number of observations on self-irradiation of samples containing homogeneously distributed quantities of added short-lived isotopes of thorium or of other α emitters. The effects of self-irradiation, of charged particle irradiation from extraneous emitters or from accelerated ions, and of X- and γ radiations are considered together, rather than in separate sections as interpretations of the observed phenomena are often interrelated.
