Flexible Manufacturing Systems

  • Chapter

Abstract

To the Japanese, flexible manufacturing system (FMS) means flexible machining system, as is made clear in Jack Hollingum’s review of the situation at the end of 1982. At that time, several Japanese companies were using their own interpretation of FMS in machine shops, and several relied on quite a number of operators, while there was little in the way of computer control.
