Zusammenfassung
Konventionelle Systeme zur Produktionsplanung und -steuerung (PPS) sind durch eine Zentralisierung von Funktionalität gekennzeichnet. Die Aufgaben der Produktionsprogrammplanung, der Mengenplanung (Materialwirtschaft), der Termin- und Kapazitätsplanung (Zeitwirtschaft), meist auch der Auftragsveranlassung und der Auftragsüberwachung werden auf einem zentralen Großrechner realisiert. Die strikte Trennung von teilweise dezentraler Datenentstehung (Verfügbarkeit von Produktionsmitteln, Verfügbarkeit von Material, Störungsmeldungen, Ausschuß, etc.) und zentraler Datenverarbeitung hat historische Gründe: keine Verfügbarkeit von dezentraler leistungsfähiger Rechnerkapazität, keine interaktiven graphischen Benutzerschnittstellen zur leichteren Bedienbarkeit der Software für EDV-Laien, etc.
