Abstract

Antiphospholipid (anticardiolipin) syndrome (APS) is a chronic disorder associated with recurrent venous and/or arterial thrombosis, recurrent abortions, thrombocytopenia and/or autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and positive results are obtained from tests for antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies and/or lupus anticoagulant (LA). The disease can occur alone (primary APS) or in association with other systemic autoimmune diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (secondary APS).
