Non-Imaging Studies

Abstract

These studies comprise in vitro and external probe in vivo investigations. Unusually in nuclear medicine, the in vitro studies can estimate absolute values of physiological parameters. The probe studies can assess the in vivo distribution of radionuclides, that would be difficult to image. Both require only small administration activities, except in the case of intraoperative probes. Additionally, a type of external probe investigation which requires even less activity, is one using whole body counters. This can be used instead of, for instance faecal counting, to estimate the amount of tracer retained in the whole body. Non-imaging studies are the simplest investigations to undertake. This simplicity, however, should not obscure the need for accuracy at every part of the process. Since the result is a number rather than an image, the potential for post-investigation quality assessment is very limited.
