Abstract
Before the establishment of a complete diagram in 1976, several intermediate phases had been found, GdRh2, GdRh3, GdRh5, Gd3Rh, Gd7Rh3, Gd5Rh3, Gd3Rh2, Gd4Rh3 and GdRh [1 to 5]. The diagram was determined using thermal analysis, metallography and X-ray diffraction; nine intermediate phases were identified, five of which were formed by peritectic reactions. The compounds GdRh, GdRh2 and GdRh5 were found to melt congruently. Two compounds were not stable at room temperature. Eutectics were found at ~ 18 at% rhodium melting at 920 °C, at ~55 at% rhodium and 1395 °C between GdRh and GdRh2, at 80 at% rhodium and 1460 °C, and at ~87 at% rhodium and ~1470 °C.
