Dinitrogen Sulfide, SNN

Abstract

Flash vacuum pyrolysis of 5-phenyl-1,2,3,4-thiatriazole produces SNN and C6H5CN. It was carried out at temperatures between 300 and 400 °C/10−3 to 10−5 Torr in an apparatus enabling contact times of ca. 1 ms. SNN can be isolated as a solid (together with C6H5CN) at the cold end of a liquid nitrogen cryostat at 77 K or in an Ar matrix at 10 to 20 K. The yield of SNN, measured by its IR absorbance relative to that of benzonitrile, critically depends on the contact time in the oven and hence on the oven design [1, 2].
