Abstract

Fibrin sealant has been used in cardiovascular surgery in Europe for more than 10 years [1–5]. By mimicking the natural pathway of fibrin production, it allows for topical bleeding control [6–8] and for presealing of vascular prostheses [9–18]. When needed under extracorporeal circulation, the method has been found to be especially helpful in redo-operations and emergency resternotomies, as illustrated by a recent multicenter trial in the United States [20].
