Zusammenfassung
Der große österreichische Komponist Gustav Mahler hat einmal ausgerufen:„Die einzige Wahrheit auf der Erde ist unser Gefühl!“. Damit verdeutlicht er unser Ausgeliefert- und Abhängigsein von Gefühlen und hat — wie auch in seiner Musik — klar ausgedrückt, was wir auch psychobiologisch heute glauben zu wissen. Jene Hirnregionen, die Gefühlszustände erzeugen, liegen in der Mehrzahl zwischen den phylogenetisch sehr alten Strukturen des Stammhirns und den neokortikalen Hemisphären. Diese Zwischenposition ist aber nicht als ein hierarchischer Baustein in der Hirnentwicklung zu verstehen; die Verbindungen der emotionalen Strukturen zu den darüber (superior) und darunter lokalisierten sind so eng, daß man sie symbolisch wie eine Klammer sehen könnte, die Kognition und Trieb zusammenhält. So entsteht in unserem subjektiven Erleben die Untrennbarkeit aller Gedanken,Vorstellungen und Verhaltensweisen von ihren emotionalen Begleitreaktionen, die aber eben keine Begleiterscheinungen unseres Denkens, sondern deren integraler Bestandteil sind. Trotzdem lassen sich, vor allem anhand von Gefühlsstörungen, die wichtigsten neuronalen Quellen einzelner Gefühle isolieren. Sowohl ein Zuviel (Angst,Trauer) als auch ein Zuwenig an Emotionen (Soziopathie, einzelne Hirnschädigungen) stören das Zusammenleben mit anderen Menschen empfindlich und können zu individuellen und sozialen Katastrophen führen. Die Biologische Psychologie der Emotionen ist daher nicht nur theoretisch von Bedeutung, sondern stellt eine notwendige Grundlage von Prävention und Therapie solcher emotionaler Verhaltensstörungen dar.
