Neurochemical Aspects of the Entrainment of the Mammalian Suprachiasmatic Circadian Pacemaker

  • Chapter

Abstract

The localisation of the mammalian circadian pacemaker to the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus (SCN) some 27 years ago has lead to an explosion of interest in this area of the brain. Today, research is aimed at determining how zeitgeber information is relayed to the SCN circadian pacemaker, including the identification of the neural pathways via which this information is communicated, the neurochemicals contained in these pathways, the receptors mediating the actions of these neurochemicals, second messenger factors implicated in mediating the phase-resetting effects of neurochemicals, and finally the sequence of intracellular events that lead to changes in clock gene expression.
