Landscape diversity — a holistic approach

Abstract

The term landscape ecosystem designates a higher rank within the hierarchy of ecosystems which focuses on the structural, functional and historical peculiarities of a certain locality while the actual landscape constitutes its spatial representative. With regard to diversity, ecosystems are characterized by their special biodiversity and geodiversity. Consequently, landscape ecosystems also have a characteristic diversity of living and abiotic elements and systems. Site-specific abiotic elements, complex units and processes form the primary framework for the composition and dynamics of organisms and, at least in part, the densities and activities of human populations. Nature and culture are specifically linked, mutually effective and interdependent in such landscape ecosystems. Geodiversity and biodiversity are thus subsets of the methodologically more complex model of landscape diversity. The role of landscape diversity is discussed with regard to the objectives of conservation. The link to development issues is given special consideration by taking into account the sustainable use of natural resources.

Diversidad del paisaje: un enfoque global

Resumen

El término ecosistema del paisaje designa una categoria superior dentro de la jerarquia de ecosistemas que se orienta hacia las peculiaridades estructurales, funcionales e histöricas de un determinado lugar, mientras que el paisaje actual constituye su representaciön espacial. Respecto a la diversidad, los ecosistemas se caracterizan por su especial biodiversidad y geodiversidad. Por lo tanto, los ecosistemas del paisaje tienen también una diversidad característica de sistemas y elementos bióticos y abióticos. Elementos abióticos específicos de un lugar, complejas unidades y procesos forman el principal entramado para la composition y dinámicas de los organismos y, al menos en parte, las densidades y actividades de las poblaciones humanas. En tales ecosistemas del paisaje, naturaleza y cultura suelen aparecer generalmente unidas y ser mutuamente efectivas e interdependientes. Geodiversidad y biodiversidad son por tanto un subgrupo del modelo metodolögicamente más complejo de la diversidad del paisaje. El papel que juega la diversidad del paisaje es discutido con respecto a los objetivos de conservación. Se concede especial consideración a la relación con temas de desarrollo, teniendo en cuenta el uso sostenible de los recursos naturales.
