Die Elemente sind typische Metalle. V₂O₅ ist amphoter, Ta₂O₅ sauer. Die Tendenz, in niederen Oxidationsstufen aufzutreten, nimmt mit steigender Ordnungszahl ab. So sind Vanadin(V)-Verbindungen im Gegensatz zu Tantal(V)-Verbindungen leicht zu V(III)- und V(II)-Verbindungen reduzierbar.
