Abstract
The full system of partial differential equations describing the electromagnetic field was published for the first time by James Clerk Maxwell in his work A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. I,II [91,92] in the year 1862. He based his theory on the work and experiments of Ampère, Gauss, and Faraday. His great contribution lies in the unification of the different equations to a set of partial differential equations. The introduction of the displacement current, which generalizes Ampère’s law, allowed him to forsee the physical phenomena of the propagation of electromagnetic waves.
