Abstract
Ideally, the performance of a video delivery system is to be maintained even when the number of concurrent clients increases. In terms of scalability, the startup latency is expected to decrease exponentially with the bandwidth allocated. Broadcast VoD is a cost-effective approach to provide high-demand videos over a wide geographic area. However, in the context of information retrieval, basic VCR interactive functions are often used by the users to locate, review or skip areas of interest within a video. In the presence of reserved spare bandwidth, contingency channels can support VCR functions. While this is feasible in multicast systems, it may not be economically possible in broadcasting systems, because spare channels are too expensive to be reserved. In this chapter, we shall present an overview of some techniques for providing short startup latency and fundamental VCR interactions (play/resume, pause, rewind, fast-forward, skip-forward and backward repositioning) that facilitate information retrieval from on-demand broadcasting video systems.
