Abstract
The potential distribution on planar lipid bilayers or modification of this distribution can be analyzed by electrical methods based on electrophoretic mobility, compensation of intramembrane field, transport of hydrophobic ions, and nonstationary potential or current measurements. These methods give information on changes of the electric potential averaged in planes that are located at different positions relative to the membrane/water interface. The numerous analytical applications of this approach include quantitative analysis of substance-membrane interactions and development of biosensors.
