Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and traditional Japanese or “Kampo” medicine (TJM), unlike many other forms of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), have a literature of use to treat disorders of aging. However, as with virtually all other forms of CAM, there is a exceedingly small number of investigations many of which have major methodological flaws, preventing one from drawing firm conclusions about any of their benefits. Virtually all of the studies were performed in the Far East. We will narrow the focus of the discussion to medications used in TCM and TJM and exclude the use of acupuncture, which is discussed in another chapter.
