Abstract

It has been understood for a long time that there is a close connection between the geometric and the arithmetic properties of algebraic varieties. Results of this type have been firmly established for curves for some time and substantial progress was also made for surfaces. The higher dimensional versions of these problems are largely wide open, and there does not seem to be full agreement about even the main conjectures.
