Undercooling of Quasicrystal-Forming Liquid Alloys

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Materials Science ((SSMATERIALS,volume 55))

Summary

This work gives a review of investigations of the undercooling behavior of melts forming quasicrystalline and polytetrahedral phases. It turns out that these special kinds of solid phases exhibit a lower activation threshold for nucleation than conventional crystalline phases, which can be interpreted in terms of a similarity of the short-range order in undercooled melts and polytetrahedral phases.
