Summary

In this short introductory review on the “prehistory” of quasicrystals, written for the students of the Heraeus Summer School, five different roots are briefly mentioned, from which ideas grew, which helped to understand and accept these alloys, which led to an extension of classical crystallography and of our understanding of solid state physics of non-periodic crystals. Some basic tools are mentioned which are used in relation with quasicrystals and could be helpful in the context of other topics described in the following chapters.
