Abstract
The special role of hydrogen in science has been recognized ever since Lavoisier identified the chemical properties of hydrogen in the eighteenth century. The names associated with the history of hydrogen are familiar: Balmer, whose empirical formula had startling predictive power; Bohr, whose early papers on hydrogen pointed the way to the creation of quantum mechanics; Dirac, whose relativistic quantum theory confounded the enigma of the fine structure of hydrogen; Rabi and Lamb, whose measurements of the hyperfine and fine structure of hydrogen pointed to the relativistic quantum electrodynamics of Schwinger, Feynman and Tomanga.
