Rhododendron

  • Chapter
The Plant Life of China

Abstract

The genus Rhododendron comprises about 900 species of which many are native to China, the remainder being spread more thinly across the northern hemisphere. Since so many of them are attractive garden subjects it is hardly surprising that plant hunters have returned repeatedly to natural concentrations of diversity, seeking material either already suitable for gardens or perhaps useful for breeding. To understand the genus it is necessary to know something of its classification.
