Abstract

Crystals represent the highest degree of spatial order. From the physical viewpoint, a crystal is an ensemble of an infinite number of atoms that are uniformly packed in regular rows and planes and fill the entire space. In mathematical terms this means that a crystal lattice is invariant under symmetry transformations comprising the space group of the crystal. Symmetry and space groups of crystals were comprehensively discussed in Chap. 2.
