Abstract

The aim of this monograph has been to overview more than a century of research on the genetics, physiology, biochemistry and evolution of the pollen-pistil rejection processes (especially incompatibility, but also incongruity) that operate within and between species to establish lower and upper limits of outbreeding in flowering plants. An attempt is made below to list some of the most significant results of this work and to comment briefly on possible priorities for further research efforts.
