Abstract
In the metallic bond, there is no condition for the bonds to comply with a valency saturation leading to whole numbered stoichiometry as in compounds. In this respect, the metallic bond is distinguished from homopolar bonding, also known as covalent bonding, and from heteropolar bonding, known as ionic bonding. The absence of whole numbered stoichiometric relationships leads to an important property of alloys: the property that metallic elements can form alloys among each other with continuously varying composition. The range of the composition of an alloy series may extend from all possible concentrations to limited concentrations and may also be bounded by the temperature. There are essentially two types of alloys; substitutional alloys and interstitial alloys.
