Abstract
Bone infections and inflammations constitute one of the most common and important indications of bone scanning, the sensitivity of which has been firmly established (Duszynski et al. 1975; Gilday et al. 1975). The offending organisms vary greatly in infective diseases, and the etiologies are obscure in nonspecific osteitides except radiation osteitis. For a scintigraphic description bone infections may be categorized according to the site of the initial or major affliction. Thus, the pyogenic infection in bone marrow is termed osteomyelitis, and the infections of the cortex, periosteum, and soft tissues, respectively, are referred to as infective osteitis, infective periostitits, and soft-tissue abscess.
