Abstract
Shortly after their wedding, Søren Georg Abel and his bride, Anne Marie Simonsen, took over the vicarage at Finnøy, where he began to practice his ecclesiastical calling the way he had been trained under his father at Gjerstad. From the beginning he attracted favourable attention in the local district of Ryfylke. Here too he founded a reading society with a public lending library and, given his knowledge and his practical experience, he quickly raised the standard of the schooling.
