Laminar-Turbulent Transition

Part of the book series: IUTAM Symposia ((IUTAM))

Abstract

The history of the compressible linear stability theory, as applied to a laminar boundary layer, is reviewed from its inception in 1938 up to 1970. First, the theoretical and experimental work up to 1962 is discussed and the general ideas prevailing at that time are noted. Next an account is given of how work on this subject, starting in the 1950’s, came to be done at the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In the main section, the chronology of the numerical and experimental work carried out at JPL in the 1960’s is given, along with the key results and additional comments. Finally, the very different ideas arrived at as a result of this work are discussed and the importance of having reliable numerical results is stressed.
