Abstract
Cause and effect of longitudinal vortices in boundary layer transition are examined through studies on receptivity to freestream turbulence and secondary instability of a spanwise periodic flow, respectively. Receptivity results are consistent with experimental data and underscore the importance of nonparallel effects. Floquet analysis reveals that large spanwise modulations cause strong amplification of secondary disturbances at high frequencies and may lead to imminent transition.
