Abstract

When radiation passes through a transparent medium, the species in the medium scatter a fraction of the beam in all directions. The wavelength of the scattered radiation is almost the same as that of the incident radiation (Rayleigh scattering). The intensity of the scattered radiation is related to the molecular weight, the molecular size, the number, and the shape of the species in the medium as well as the scattering angle.
