Abstract

For assessment of the abdominal aorta the advantages of cross-sectional imaging over conventional catheter angiography are well established. Although ECG-gating is not required, clinical acceptance of non-contrast black-blood spin echo (SE) and bright-blood gradient recalled echo (GRE) scans has been limited. CT angiography has been the preferred modality for cross-sectional imaging of the abdominal aorta. Three-dimensional contrast MRA has overcome the limitations inherent to conventional MR techniques, including long imaging times and reduced vessel-to-background contrast in regions of slow flow. It is now beginning to surpass CT angiography as the modality of choice for assessment of the abdominal aorta.
