Abstract
Due to the political developments of the 1970s and 1980s, both the amount and the quality of the data that is being collected has increased considerably over the past 10 to 15 years. Environmental management and protection have become household terms. In the Western industrial nations, most governments are encouraged by their constituencies to pay attention to environmental issues and to support efforts to increase the efficiency of environmental protection. Green parties have been voted into numerous parliaments, and although they try to broaden their political agenda, environmental protection still forms their focus of activities and main area of expertise.
