Rhizomatous plants with perennial aerial shoots, terrestrial or epiphytic. Roots fibrous. Stems thin, branching or simple, erect or scrambling to 40 cm. Leaves alternate, distichous, sessile to shortly petiolate, without a sheathing base; blades ovate to lanceolate, resupinate; veins 3–5, parallel, with few cross-veins or higher venation reticulate, midrib prominent. Inflorescence an axillary, monobrachial cincinnus or flowers borne singly. Flowers small, hypogynous, actinomorphic, articulated on the pedicels (Luzuriaga) or at base of ovary (Drymophila); perianth marcescent (Luzuriaga) or caducous (Drymophila), not twisted after anthesis; tepals in 2 whorls of 3 (or rarely 4 in Drymophila), subequal, free, white or pale pink, nectariferous at the base. Stamens 3 + 3; filaments free; anthers 2-thecate, 4-sporangiate, basifixed, introrse or extrorse, dehiscing longitudinally by slits or apical pores. Gynoecium of 3 (or 4) united carpels, ovary 3-(or 4-) locular or rarely 1-locular, style simple, capitate or deeply trifid (Drymophila), erect; ovules several, hemianatropous, in 2 rows on axile or subparietal placentas. Fruit a berry. Seeds few to numerous, small, ovoid, pale brown/yellow; embryo 1/3 to 2/3 as long as the seed; endosperm copious, without starch.
