Abstract
A very dense GPS/Leveling survey along the first order precise leveling routes in Japan has been conducted by the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI). Since the results obtained are geoid heights which are completely independent of the gravimetric geoid and are considered to be more accurate, at least in long wavelength signals, than the gravimetric one, they can be used for evaluation and/or improvement of an existing gravimetric geoid.
In this study, we first made a comparison between the latest gravimetric geoid of GSI (JGEOID 93) and the GPS/Leveling geoid, and estimated correction values for the gravimetric geoid by means of the Least Squares Collocation (LSC) method. The final result shows that the RMS difference between the GPS/Leveling geoid and the gravimetric geoid after the correction is better than 7 cm in all survey areas.
