Abstract
Collembola are soil-inhabiting insects with a worldwide distribution. They are always the insect group with the greatest number of individuals. Their ecological significance results from their involvement in the decomposition of organic material and nutrient cycling processes. In spite of their key role in litter decomposition the group has not been well studied in the Neotropics. Winter (1962) published some ecological results from the Pre-Andean catchment area. In the Central Amazon lowlands, Beck (1976) reported on Collembola in inundation forests and Schaller (1969) made some observations of behavior. Sampling sites are described in Chapter 2.
