Abstract
The genus Otacanthus (family Scrophulariaceae) consists of six described species native to eastern Brazil. They grow in diverse habitats, such as coastal sand dunes (restinga) or shady rock slopes in Atlantic rain forest, from 0 to more than 2500 m elevation. Otacanthus coeruleus is found naturalized in the north of Brazil, in Madagascar, La Reunion, and the Seychelles. All species of Otacanthus consist of subshrubs with simple, opposite leaves and showy, purple to blue flowers with a white spot on the lower lip. A nearly albino form of O. platychilus has also been found. The flowers occur solitary in the axil of the upper leaves. In nature, there does not appear to be a definite flowering period (Ronse 1993; Ronse and Philcox 1993).
