Abstract
The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is a NASA mission designed to gather and interpret observations aimed at furthering the understanding of Earth’s stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere (Reber, 1993; Reber et al., 1993). The planning of the mission was motivated by projections of chemical loss of ozone in the middle atmosphere due to anthropogenic emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Quantitative assessment of the projected ozone loss requires a comprehensive understanding of the chemistry, dynamics and energetics of the upper atmosphere, and the goal of UARS is to improve this understanding by performing and interpreting global measurements of relevant parameters.
