Abstract
When the first versions of MS-Windows were released some years ago, there were some — PC novices — who were happy that it was now (almost) unnecessary to know anything about the operating system. Others — experienced DOS users or those with Macintoshes — smiled sympathetically. It wasn’t a bad start, but it was so slow and awkward and above all prone to frequent crashes that widespread use was slow to take off.
