Abstract
The most important aim of forest drainage is to increase the area of productive forest land and the growth of naturally tree-covered peatlands. Unproductive peatlands are mainly open mires, but there are also large areas of peatlands growing low-productive forest in Finland, Sweden, Russia and Canada, for instance. If climatic conditions are not limiting, the productivity of these peatlands can be increased through drainage.
