Abstract
On 26th April 1951 the death occurred in Munich in the 82nd year of his age, as the result of a street accident sustained some four weeks previously, of A. Sommerfeld, one of the most outstanding German physicists of his generation. It was vouchsafed to him to pass on to posterity in their final form five of the six projected volumes of his lectures on theoretical physics. One volume only remained uncompleted, that on thermodynamics, the preparation of which he had purposely deferred to the last.
