Abstract
The authors have been involved in the use of computer algebra systems in mathematics teaching for the past four years. In particular they have together with other colleagues received substantial government fumding for a project involving the use of a computer algebra system (Mathematica) in designing an introductory, computer based, modelling course. The authors have also been involved in a TEMPUS project aimed at introducing new approaches to the teaching of mathematics to engineers at the Technical University of Sofia. This has involved the use of Maple in teaching mathematical modelling to graduate students. More recently they have used a totally computer algebra (Derive/Maple) based approach to teaching first and second year calculus and algebra courses. The authors have also used computer algebra to support the teaching of a course in dynamical systems on two MSc progranunes. This paper outlines the authors’ experiences in these areas and, in particular, details how Maple can be used to support and enhance the teaching of a dynamical systems course.
